Have Sunburn And Swollen Forehead. How Long Will It Take To Cure?

Hello, my wife had sunburn and has swollen forehead and bottom eyelids. It looks even worst this morning than yesterday. Any idea how long will the swallowing last and what she can do to speed up the healing process? We are on vacation in Mauritius and she is afraid that our vacation is over. She never experienced anything like this before. Regards, Branko

Hi,
It seems your wife is having severe sunburn. She might try these to relieve her symptoms-
Avoid sun exposure
Apply sunscreen with SPF 50
Do frequent icing of the area
Apply calamine or aloe vera gel to soothe the burning sensation. Apply mild topical steroid like fluticasone over swollen red areas
To reduce swelling ask her to take an oral antihistaminic like cetirizine and she might also require a course of oral steroid if the swelling persists

Hope that answers your query. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Thanks for writing to us.
Overexposure to the sun can result in serious sunburns that may actually cause blistering, as well as slight swelling of the affected area. The skin has to regenerate new cells in order to heal the burns, but certain treatments may be used to soothe the pain, including applying some aloe vera gel - best if you get it from the plant and sometimes sold in supermarkets.
keep a cool bag of frozen anything on the inflammed part.
Hope this helps you.
Wishing you good health...
Regards.
