Have Thyroid Problem. Ultrasound Shows Goitre. Is Surgery Required?

Dear Sir, Good day My wife is having a thyroid problem on march 3, 2012 doctor done some test of my wife ultra sound of the neck , thyroid syntegraphy , multi nodular goitre , FT3 , FT4 ( free T4 / thyroixne free) & TSH i have all the reports for those doctor says there is no treatment for that let it be like this after 6 months he done all the test again and he says its still in same position i ask for the surgery and he says no need can you please help me what do i do and what is the solution for this problem. looking forward for your kind support in this matter. thank you Nadeem Khan

Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,

After going through the details provided by you, She is having Goitre which is multinodular.

Her thyroid function tests are normal that means it is nontoxic as there are no symptoms of hyperthyroidism or Thyrotoxicosis.

Goitre is caused by iodine deficiency so make sure it is not there by consumption of iodized salt.

Regarding treatment option as thyroid function FT3,FT4 and TSH are normal I presume that is why no antithyroid drug can be given this is correct. These medicines are given only when there is high T3 and T4.

You should consult a Endocrinologist and Surgeon to discuss various treatment option for her.

Surgery is one of the option for removal of goitre and another option recently is ethanol ablation of the nodules.
