Have Type 2 Diabetes. Sore Hips, Leg Numbness, Vertigo. Related Problems?

I am 66 years old and stay in good shape. I have type 2 diabetes and over the last several years my hips have progressively gotten sorer, especially the left. Not too long ago it was x-rayed for other reasons and the Dr. Said there was moderated ostioarthuritis. More recently, the left leg has become numb, sometimes it has control issues. In the last two weeks I have fallen down from pain in the left hip when I turned a certain way - very painful. It is now painful to lay on also. Also at the same time that this started developing I started getting vertigo and now have those problems. Could they be related?

Dear esteemed friend,

Thanks for posting your query in HCM.

I can fully understand your concern over the problems.

(A) Firstly, regarding Diabetes :-
* In long-standing diabetics, complications occur much earlier in poorly controlled diabetes. It seems that you have developed peripheral and autonomic neuropathy, which partly accounts for vertigo and numbness in lower limbs.
* Please inform your latest FBS/PPBS levels, HbA1c report and the medicines with doses/frequency that your taking at present.
* Your HbA1c target should be around 6.5%.
* Ideal diabetic control means that blood sugar should be within acceptable range throughout the day/night, that is, 24-hours.
* Once I know your sugar levels and HbA1c status, I assure you that I will help you in achieving ideal diabetic control.

(B) OSTEOARTHRITIS

* Osteoarthritis is an age-related degenerative condition, which gets accelerated in the presence of uncontrolled diabetes.

* Bone Densitometry test will give us the degree of bones thinning to a fairly accurate degree. please get the said test done at the earliest.

* The recent onset of numbness in the left leg could either be due to compression of the related nerve or as a result of peripheral neuropathy.

I therefore recommend that you immediately start with the following medicines, in addition to anti-diabetic medicines :-

(a) Tab xxx70mg one tablet once a WEEK.
(b) Tab xxxCT one tablet daily after breakfast.
(c) Tab xxx D3 (0.5mcg) one tablet daily after breakfast.
(d) Tab xxx(50mg) one tablet twice daily after breakfast and dinner.

PLEASE CONTINUE THESE MEDICINES AND REVERT BACK TO ME AFTER ONE MONTH WITH THE EXTENT OF RESPONSE.

Lastly, it is likely that you may ultimately have to undergo surgical procedure for osteoarthritis of Lt hip joint. Nevertheless, I am optimistic that with the above-prescribed medicines, you should get some relief though gradually.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Regards,

Dr. Karanwal
