I did 10 days of Atkins induction. On thw fifth day i started spottig/bleeding, and it has not stopped for 2.5 weeks. I have an implanon, so i rarely have periods and if they come, they are short. I m planning to go back to eating more carbs, but should I use back-up contraception? For how long?
Restricting calories and carbohydrates with sudden sharp weight loss, stress and excessive exercise can affect the menstrual rhythm by affecting the hormones produced by hypothalamus. However, implant is a long acting progesterone only birth control method that by itself can produce prolonged spotting/ light, irregular bleeding and absence of periods. There is only a small likelihood that the diet has affected hormonal production in a way that effectiveness of implanon is compromised. in balance though, there can only be additional benefit if you added another birth control method such as barrier method (condoms) for a short time. It would definitely take away the worry of conceiving due to method failure. So go ahead and observe the bleeding pattern over next three months. If problems persist, I would suggest seeing a specialist in this area and have a thorough review of all aspects of your health and well being.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
