Having Wet Ears, Puss At The Back Of My Earlobe. Its Painless. Is This The Cause For Concern?

I haven't put earrings in my ear since Novemberish and this morning when I got off work I noticed the back of my ear was wet, when I got home and was cleaning my face I looked at the back of my ear and the earring hole looked like it was open twice the normal hole size, it was wet with clear fluid and whe.n I squeezed my earlobe a white puss like substance came out the hole which was like if you got baking soda damp with water, it wasn't watery it was more of a pasty powder like puss. I cleaned my ear then noticed the back is raw but the front looks normal. why is this happening? BTW it's painless, its not warm as when ears get infected they get warm and it's not swallow of anything

Otolaryngologist / ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This is most probably a mild infection (usually fungal) or an allergic reaction to soap, cosmetics or metals like nickel and chrome found in earrings (sometimes even as contaminants in gold).

2. Use an ointment such as Betnovate GM or Nadimix which is a combination of an antibiotic, anti-fungal and a steroid. you may apply it to an earring and gently rotate it into the earlobe hole and apply it to the wound.

3. If it does not heal, avoid use of the earrings for a while. If there are signs that the earlobe hole may close, get a sterile plastic tube or a pure gold wire placed instead.

Regards.
