Hearing Problem, Clogged Ear Feeling. History Of Ear Problems. Been On Antibiotics. Suggestions?

I have been on antibiotic for almost ten days. One night, I had severe coughing fit due I cold, felt pain in right ear. Have had no hearing for two weeks. When I blow my nose, my right ear pops but no relief. The doctor who prescribed the antibiotic said I had an ear infection. It feels like my ear is plugged, but when it pops it feels like there's a flap that opens and closes, hence, the feeling of plugged still remains and cannot hear. I do have a history of ear problems, had tubes in six times as a child. I am now in my forties and haven't had an ear infection in 20 years. Is this something serious I should be concerned about?

Hello

Thanks for consulting H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding cold and popping of ear and ultimately feeling of plugged ear and loss of hearing. As you are saying that you are taking antibiotics for last 10 days and in your early life you were prone to ear infection and tubes had been put in your ear in your paediatric age. Now whenever you are blowing your nose you feel click sound and ear becomes loght but soon after it plugged again.

your history of illness is in favor of eustachian tube dysfunction with secretory otitis media. You are advice for these basic investigations-

(a) Pure tone audiometery.

(b) Impedance Audiometery.

After this a thorough examination and clinical co-relation of inferences of above investigations one may reach to a correct diagnosis and that may be accordingly manage.

Regards.
