Hi,
I am a 56 year old female who has had recent onset (within the last month) of persistent insomnia unresponsive to treatment, sudden weight loss of 5-8 lbs., changes in taste, light sensitivity, and changes in heat/cold sensation. I have a history of anxiety and depression and have been on medication the last 4-5 years. I have been doctoring and was diagnosed with major depressive episode last month related to coming up on 1st anniversary of my husband's death (he had end stage MS, was bedbound the previous 4 years, and I was his caregiver in addition to working full time), with limited support system (no children or grandchildren, only child, 92 year old mother in another city). I have also been dealing with increased job stress. I was tried on many different anti-depressant and anti-anxiety meds, in addition to sleep meds without success. My doctor recommended a psychiatrist referral for medication assessment and I cannot be seen until mid-January due to not enough practitioners to meet the need. I am also in menopause (no period for 9 months) and read that insomnia, weight loss, and mood changes can be symptoms. Whenever I asked about hormone replacement therapy, the doctors were hesitant to prescribe, stating increased risk of stroke and heart attack. I was able to convince them to try prescribing hormones due to my having a long history of safe birth control medication treatment and therefore being at low risk. I have been taking the hormones (PremPro) the past four days, and they seem to be helping with the insomnia as I'm sleeping better. However, I am concerned about the continued change in taste (I don't fully taste things) and the changes in heat/cold sensation (I seem to be less sensitive to heat and cold). Two weeks ago my tongue became rancid to the point where I could not eat for a day because everything tasted extremely bitter. I am wondering if these are symptoms of another medical condition, and if so, what it might be and what testing or treatment I might need. I have not had these symptoms before and they don't seem to be going away. I have an appointment to see my primary care doctor on Monday and will discuss this with him, but wanted to know if I might be able to get some ideas prior to seeing him so I could bring them up to him when I see him. Thank you.
