Hi, my girlfriend suffers from multiple conditions for which she has medications, but is recently having a recurrent problem which has remained undiagnosed, even while she was hospitalized. The doctors just seemed to ignore it, but it is causing her a great deal of distress.
So, she is bariatric (her whole life), diabetic (rx short and long lasting insulins and glipizide, "normal" glucose under meds runs in low to high 200 dg/ml), neuropathic (rx lyrica), anemic (questionable but rx iron sulphate), also rx diuretics and oxygen for swelling in legs and lungs, she is disabled due to the neuropathy (bed and wheelchair bound). Has weakened lungs, legs, heart, and kidneys, but is still aware and feisty. She also has a foley and recurrent UTIs. She has advanced risk of Poly-cystic kidney disease, her mother died from it in her 30's. She also had her thyroid removed about a year ago due to advanced goiter / potential thyroid cancer, at the recommendation of her endocrinologist. (rx levothyroxin/synthroid depending on our insurance, which switches occasionally) Not long after that she had an ovary removed and a small part of her bowel due to a "growth" that was never fully explained to us, nor was explained in her medical record (which is available to us online, thankfully?).
The problem we are worried about is that she is experiencing tremors and weakness, seemingly unrelated to her diabetes or any other disorder. She experienced this about a year ago, and doctors were unable to resolve or diagnose it, though she said that the drug "Requip" helped her a little at the time. The doctors didn't tell us or seem to be interested in this symptom. Initially, they gave her a transfusion based on her low hemoglobin, then a second. Then, though the problem remained, though diminished, they just seemed to forget about it. She had two additional transfusions after that, but they did not have the same effect as the first. At the time, she was institutionalized (either in a hospital or a nursing home), but now, about a year later, she is experiencing the same symptoms again. It is usually worse in the morning (we are aware of Somogyi/dawn phenomenon) or early day, and it does not appear to be due to low blood glucose (even relative), based on our normal glucose meter tests.
She has not had this problem for almost a year, had (relatively) regular menses, no obvious fluid retention (except when in her wheelchair for too long)... the only other thing is that her bowel movements are extremely "irregular"... during the entire year she was hospitalized (and NOT on iron supplements the whole time) she was on stool softeners, magnesium citrate, fiber, etc... she seems to have a bowel blockage of some kind. (This started a few months before she was hospitalized) When she does poop, it tends to be large (potato sized) and hard. In addition, there seems to be a kind of chalky mineral pieces in it, not hard but not exactly soft, and the feces sometimes has a clay-like consistency. She only occasionally has what I would call "regular" bowel movements.
I am her sole (non-medical) caregiver, I administer all her medications and help her decide if she needs PRN treatment. I am fully capable of researching unknown information for her. Is there any resource you can point me to, for researching this.
Tried to be inclusive, but I understand any information is not a diagnosis. Anything will help at this point.
Thank you.
