High BP, Low Plasma Renin Activity, Elevated Peripheral Resistance. X Ray Showed Retinal Hemorrhage. Go For Weight Reduction?
A 5'6", 210 pound, 64 year old man had a physical exam prior to his retirement for corporate work. His blood pressure was greater than 180/115 mmHg on three separate days (normal blood pressure is 120/80). Further examination showed normal to low plasma renin activity, elevated peripheral resistance (PR), x-ray showed left ventricular hypertrophy and retinal hemorrhage and cardiac out put was 7.2 L/min (normal is 3.5 to 5.5 L/min). Recommended therapy was weight reduction to his ideal weight, low salt diet. If these life style changes did not change his condition the following medication will be started in the following order: oral diuretics progress to beta blockers and then to a vasodilator.
Hi, I have gone through your query and understand your concerns.
You should see a local doctor soon.
1. You should take at least two or more medicines (work better than one) since the complications (hypertensive retinopathy and retinal vascular damage) already occur. You should remember: The treatment goal for most adults is to get and keep blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg. If you have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, the goal is to get and keep blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg.
2. Also you need continue to lose weight by cutting back your calorie intake and doing more physical activity.
3. You should know one have high hypertension (HBP) will need lifelong treatment. Sticking to your treatment plan is important. It can help prevent or delay problems related to HBP and help you live and stay active longer.
4. Rule out diabetes, etc...
Wish you good health.
