Dear patient,

Definitely the risk/benefit ratio of being on medications to control blood pressure strongly favors the positive aspects, including reduction of coronary disease, heart failure and stroke. As you age or your body composition changes (for example losing weight or doing significantly more exercise) the requirements of blood pressure medications can change; the most important and practical long-term side effect of all antihypertensives is an increased risk of orthostatic hypotension (lower blood pressure when changing position) and if not careful falls and injury, but if acknowledged appropiately. most patients still benefit more from being on the medications than off them.
