High Risk Pregnancy Due To Back Surgery, On Cpap. Has Gestational Diabetes, Has Weight Loss. Any Danger ?
Please, I need help fast. My daughter-in-law, age 37, is due Oct 8th. She is a High risk pregnancy, due to severe back injuries. Surgery caused complications, clot to the lung and she is now on a C pap. She recently was diagnosed with gestational diabetes (last week) She is currently on the diet the Dr. suggested and has lost 4 pounds, but has been getting BG readings around 106 when she gets up in the mornings. The Dr. says this is too high and insists she cut her carb intake to 15 grams per meal with 2 free carb snacks. I believe this to be dangerous for her and the baby, possibly fatal. Any advise.

From what you have described your daughter in law has three issues
1. Back injuries
2. CPAP management and treatment for blood clot in lung.
3 Gestational diabetes or GDM.
Out of all three, GDM is the least serious issue. FBG of 106 is fairly good but we like to have it below 95mg%. this can be achieved with diet or by adding small dose of insulin. Her weight loss is nothing to worry about as her weight doesn't translate into baby's weight .
As long as her sugars are within targets ie fasting
What is more important is the treatment for her clot, and how we manage her around delivery and thereafter.

Your daughter in laws pregnancy is really a high risk one but increased blood sugar level, if controlled well by cutting down carbohydrates is not fatal but infact in favour of safe pregnancy. High and uncontrolled sugar levels can cause fetal demise at any stage of pregnancy and has to be managed first by diet and if not controlled than wit the help of insulin inj. .
Regarding back injury, she may not be allowed normal vaginal delivery as it may aggrevate er problem.
