Hospitalised Due To Quickening Of Heartrate. Need Advice On Diet Changes. Any Online Discussion Forum?

good morning, I have experienced a quickening of my heartrate which resulted in me being hospitalised for a night. My problem is that I live in a city that does not have a Heart Specialist so have to wait for him to visit my area. I am wanting to understand the diet changes I need to get involved in. Are you able to point me to somewhere where I can discuss this online or are you able to help me directly. Much gratitude, Tangiwai Ria

Hi Tangiwai, Welcome to HCM.

Based on the limited information you have given it is difficult to provide any advise. Increase in heart rate can be caused due to variety of reasons including food.

Normally, when we eat our heart rate increases slightly due to increase in activity of the sympathetic nervous system. However, food rich in fat, salt, caffeine, alcohol as well as smoking increases heart rate more in some people than others. So to answer your question such food should be avoided.

However, there are many other reasons that heart rate can be increased and need to do systematic work up to determine the cause. You may need some heart rate lowering medications as well. Thus, I will advise you to get yourself evaluated by the cardiologist. Until the cardiologist visits your area, you can do some relaxation exercises such as meditation and avoid anything that can increase your heart rate (caffeine, salty and fatty food, alcohol etc). Also in the meanwhile if you experience such episodes again I will advise that you consult your primary physician immediately.

Hope this helps.
