How Accurate Is RNA Test Results At Tenth Day Of Exposure?

Is a rna test accurate at day 10? I had protected sex with a sex worker, after that encounter I have flu like symptoms. So I took and rna test on day 10 after exposure and I would like to know if that result is accurate or I should be test again? Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. RNA test measure viral load in the circulation. The HIV RNA test is deemed to be 100% conclusive if done after 10 to 12 days from the date of exposure. So it is accurate. WHO recommends to test again at 90 days of exposure.

The 4th generation test or DUO (Combo) test gives almost 95 to 99 % accuracy. The combo test which tests both antigen and antibody. The antibody test gives 95% and antigen test gives 99% conclusive. So go for combo test or RNA test at 90 days for reassurance.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
