Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have IBS C and have quite bad anxiety pains. I was recently given venlafaxine but it aggravated my constipation and I was unable to continue with it - it did definitely assist in reduction of the anxiety. Are there any prescriptions that you can suggest that would address my anx but not aggravate the C . I do recall trying Citalopram quite a while ago but my gut (very sensitive) reacted badly to the drug. A similar result was had with another drug starting with S (sertraline??) but cannot remember the name.
To treat IBS, you will have to make lifestyle & dietary changes. Avoid caffeine, smoking, cut on alcohol, limit milk & cheese. Take smaller meals multiple times a day. Take fiber in your diet & whole grain, nuts. Avoid taking red meat, it will worsen your constipation.
Take papayas(raw & ripe), berries, veggies. Plenty of water, exercises & adequate sleep. Laxatives & bulking agents are effective. Avoid junk food.
Take SSRI's (Celexa, Prozac, Lexapro) they are likely not to cause constipation. Venlafaxine is an SSNRI. Take medications always under consultation with your treating local doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
