Hi,

I understand you would like your father's echocardiogram interpreted. Your father's echo shows moderately decreased ejection fraction, with enlarged left atrium and ventricle. What this means is that your father's heart is not pumping as much blood as a normal heart each time it beats.

This causes the blood to back up in the heart so that it is more full than normal, which expands it. This is also called congestive heart failure. It doesn't actually mean his heart is failing, it just means it is not pumping blood like normal.

Sometimes this doesn't cause patients any problems, but sometimes the blood can back up into the lungs and into the rest of the body, causing shortness of breath (especially when laying flat) and/or swelling in the legs.

Your father should try not to have too much salt in his diet, and he needs to be on medications to help protect his heart from getting weaker. I hope this helps. Of course his doctor will need to manage his medications and can explain more specifics to his particular case. I hope he is doing well, if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch
