Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Thank you. My husband has a super pubic catheter. For the past several months he has been plagued with a bladder infection that gets cleared up with an antibiotic taken for 10 days. Then it will come back after several weeks. The sign that it has returned are little red dots on his right leg. Is there a known antibiotic that will get rid of this infection or is there something more we need to do? We do have visiting nurse that comes in to change the catheter every three weeks. The nameof the antibiotic this time is sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds tablet.
Since he has already suprapubic catheter in place which itself is a source of infection and a bladder infection is chronic thus following is my opinion:
According to the Journal of American Family Physician: Patients at risk of complicated urinary tract infections are best managed with - broad-spectrum antibiotics initially, - urine culture to guide subsequent therapy, and - renal imaging studies if structural abnormalities are suspected.

How Can UTI Be Treated?
Hello, Since he has already suprapubic catheter in place which itself is a source of infection and a bladder infection is chronic thus following is my opinion: According to the Journal of American Family Physician: Patients at risk of complicated urinary tract infections are best managed with - broad-spectrum antibiotics initially, - urine culture to guide subsequent therapy, and - renal imaging studies if structural abnormalities are suspected. Other predisposing factors which can be considered are any immunosuppression, diabetes, chronic kidney disease [CKD], being in a nursing home or hospital. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Munish Sood
