Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter. Symptoms age six. 8-9 mm pineal cyst. Age eleven 12mm pineal cyst. Age thirteen 14 mm pineal cyst. Symptoms from age six to age thirteen present. Headache mid-forehead, blurry vision, trouble seeing white board at school, nausea, dizzy. Has headache most all the time and when It gets bad she sleeps 12-13 hours and will nap during the day. Missing school. Tardy trying to get her up for school. Getting worse. Neuro-surgeon unconcerned but did refer to Dr Dong Kim, specialist. Don t want to over react but has gotten steadily worse.
Pineal gland cyst is common in the population. However, most of the cysts are asymptomatic. If it is slowly increasing in size, then it may cause headache & sometimes it may cause hydrocephalus (obstruction to the brain fluid pathway). If it is symptomatic then treatment is needed. I am sorry to say that surgery (excision of the cyst) is the only treatment option. Before going to surgery, confirmation of the diagnosis is necessary. Because these are very rarely symptomatic. Tension headache & migraine should be excluded, as these are the most common causes of headache.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
