How Can A Burning Sensation In Mouth Be Relieved?

How to relieve a burning sensation in mouth? Roof of mouth and tongue have a sensation like real spicy food has been eaten even though that has not happened. Only small relief from sucking on ice cubes. Any thoughts? I did have gum surgery prior to these symptoms but that was several months ago.

Brief Answer: BURNING MOUTH SYNDROME.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain you have a burning mouth syndrome in which there is burning feeling most commonly on the tongue.
It can also be on other parts of the mouth like roof of the mouth, inner lips and cheeks, gums etc.

Most of the times there is no specific reason found for burning mouth syndrome but it can also occur due to some medical conditions like Side effect of certain medicines causing dry mouth which in turn causes burning mouth, Nerve damage, Diabetes, thyroid problems, Auto immune disease like Sjogrens syndrome, Nutritional deficiency specifically iron and vitamin B, Acid reflux problems etc.

A thought can be made of nerve damage as you have undergone gum surgery which could have caused nerve damage.

I would suggest you to consult an oral pathologist who can do a clinical evaluation and take your detailed medical history to rule out the exact cause of burning mouth and treat you accordingly.

Sucking ice pops, using numbing mouthwashes, painkillers and drinking plenty of water preferably cold can be helpful.

Avoid tobacco, alcohol, chillies, hot foods, alcohol containing mouthwashes can help.

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards..
