How Can A Dislocated Jaw Be Treated?

Hi. My friend has a dislocated jaw and was wired shut on both sides. In the hospital they recommended that he mash his pain killers, dilute with water and then drink through a straw. Which they did for him in the hospital first. He also drinks other medications. My question is, does it matter what pill can be crushed and drunk that way or are there any restrictions to some.
