A person passed by a dog which tried to bite him ion July 2017,but his trouser was not pierced and there was no bite on the skin, only saliva was found on the trouser. Dog was regularly vaccinated from 2013.Dog died yesterday,i.e on Sat 20th October. Doctor says dog died probably due to cancer, or after his normal life span.(clinical diagnosis). Dog was not eating properly from few days and was being treated by the Vet. Now the person attacked is worried whether Dog was rhabid? Pl advise
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The vet would be able to identify the sings of rabies in case the dog died of rabies so very likely this is not the case., especially if the dog was not in contact with wild animals (in camps in mountains). If you would like to rule out rabies completely a test for rabies can be done in the brain of the dog (if still available). This is a very quick test and very accurate.
If the vet can not rule out that the dog was having rabies or the test can not be done on the brain of the dog than the person needs to take prophylaxis for rabies just to be on the safe side.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
