How Can A Dog Scratch Be Treated?

I got 5 doses of rabies vaccine between 5th July and 2nd August 2017 alonw with tetanus injection. A stary dog had then put his teeth on my hand, though no blood came out. However, today, an hour ago I was scratched by a stary puppy s (only 20 day old) nail . Will I need to be vaccinated again? I will be going to the pharmacy tomorrow anyhow and consult there. Thanks and Regards.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

I am glad we connected.

A recent scratch by a puppy may not need any more immunisation because the virus would need time to travel to the body. In cases where there is no cut to the skin, the chance of infection is also usually low.

However, seeing a doctor and getting the wound checked would be a good idea. It is also a good idea to observe the dog to look for any signs of rabies. In case the dog dies or any signs develop, getting a check up would be a good idea.

I hope that this works for you! All the best.
