How Can A Fractured Arm Be Treated?

Hi my son is a competitive gymnast who will be 16 this November, he suffered a high bar accident where he broke his left ulna with a 5 mm dorsal displacement with about 15% anterior angulation, with no dislocation. The ER would not reduce the fracture. The first Ortho, feels that the fracture will remodel over time, but would do surgery. The second Ortho, offered surgery only. The challenge is my son would like to go the naval academy in 2 plus years, and having hardware in his arm then requires a medical dispensation. We live in PA, I do clinical research for a living, any suggestions on an Ortho that would consider reduction, and surgery as a last resort without hardware, I can send the dicom images. Thanks Henry YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Better to go for surgery, because surgery give good anatomical reduction and complications are low in surgical correction. Conservative management may cause improper alignment and may affect his career too. Moreover he can return to gymnastics even faster with surgical correction.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedic and go for surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
