How Can A Fractured Toe Be Treated?

I think my big toe is broken and I m not sure about the top of the foot. It doesn t seem to be very swollen, but I think it has shifted a bit to the left. It happened about 3 hours ago and the pain is getting worse and I am having trouble walking in general, but also have to go up and down the stairs. If I waited to see my doctor tomorrow, will it hinder the healing process? Would it be better to go to the emergency room tonight?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you are having severe pain and even unable to stand then i would recommend you that you should go to emergency department now and get your x-ray done to rule out any fractured bone. In the meanwhile provide complete rest to your foot, apply ice pack over it and elevate it above the heart this will help to improve the soft tissue injury. You can also take NSAIDs for pain control.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
