How Can A Lump At He Incision Scar At The Abdomen Be Treated?

In Dec 2015 I had surgery for ovarian cancer. I was cut from rib cage to pelvic bone. The cancer was stage 3C. A colostomy was done, high on the right side. I underwent 15 months of chemo 3 weeks between treatments. Recently, I have noticed a lump near my navel under the incision scar. It seems to be growing rather rapidly. It went from hard to soft, doesn t hurt unless I push on it, then it is sore.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most probable cause of lump under the scars can be due to incision hernia wherein the weakness in a part of the scar gives up allowing abdominal contents to protrude and reduce. Can go from hard to soft, but is usually reducible. Another reasons can be stitch abscess or foreign body granuloma or abscess.

This can be confirmed by clinical examination by a general surgeon. Confirmation by an ultrasound or CT scan. Go for surgery if advised by your Surgeon and most importantly get a review for condition of the cancer that was treated to decide further management if needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
