How Can A Painful Blood Clot On The Leg Be Treated?

My son, 46 yrs old, was racing on a motorcycle & tumbled a week ago. He has a large purple, black, hard ball-like blood clot on his leg that is very painfull. He has not been to the Dr. he feels it will just go away. I’m concerned that it may break loose & travel to his heart or other vital organ. What are the risks of him just doing nothing?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your son has traumatic bruise and swelling. It might not be deep vein thrombosis. If needed USG scan can be done for local part. For traumatic swelling ice can be applied and avoid strenous activities. Anti inflammatory drug can be prescribed. You can Consult orthopedic surgeon for examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
