How Can A Painful Cyst On The Labia Be Treated?

Hello, I believe that I have a cyst on the labia of my vagina. It is swollen and slightly painful. It has been present for the past 2 days. I take swimming lessons, can I continue or do I need to see my Dr. first? Also will using an over the counter ointment such as Monistat be helpful and a first intervention prior to a Dr. Visit? Thank you, Karen

Hello,

Painful cyst on the labia needs attention first. It is caused due to infection. Hence, use of antifungal agents like Monistat will not be helpful. Also, you need to stop taking your swimming lessons till your infection subsides completely.

Kindly do the following to overcome it.
1. Clean the area with antiseptic solution like Povidone-Iodine solution.
2. Take a course of oral antibiotics containing Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid.
3. Take analgesic medication containing Ibuprofen.
4. Wear loose-fitting undergarments preferably made of cotton and avoid friction in the region.
5. Abstain from sexual activities till the symptoms subside completely.

By adopting to above measures, if the condition doesn't get better in 3 days, you might need incision and drainage of the cyst by minor surgical procedure. Kindly consult gynecologist in this regard for further management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
