How Can A Perforated Eardrum Be Treated?

Hi I was wondering if a perforated eardrum can be sewn shut, or are myringoplasty and Tympanoplasty really the only options? Also, is it possible for the eardrum to close/heal on its own and hearing to be restored, even after a period of 4 years? I am a 23 year old male. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A perforated eardrum can heal on their own but it depends on the size of the perforation. In your case, it has been about four years so there is less chance that it will heal on its own and it is advisable to get yourself treated by an ENT specialist as it can lead to repeated infection and permanent hearing loss.

He will assess your condition and prescribe appropriate treatment. You may need to undergo a surgical repair.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
