How Can A Pinched Nerve In The Neck Be Treated?

I am suffering from a nerve impingement (pinched nerve) in the cervical region( 4-5 and 5-6) of my neck. Gabapentin has been mentioned as a possible pain reducer. I have no symptoms or history of seizures or shingles. Will you please comment about possible effectiveness. I am on Tylenol + codeine now.

Hello,

Maybe you have read on the internet that Gabapentin is a medication used for patient with seizure or shingles and you wonder why the doctor prescribed to you when you do not have any of this disease. In fact Gabapentin is given also for pain that originates from nerve impingement of nerve compression in cervical hernia or people with diabetes where nerves are damaged.

So, I would recommend you this drug to use for long-term such as 1 or 2 months. You can combine this with physical therapy such as manual, tens, ultrasound therapy for the muscles of the neck that might be rigid. If after 2 months you are not better, I suggest you to do a neck MRI to see if there is any cervical discal hernia advanced stage that does not improves with this medication and may need surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Edvin Selmani
