How Can A Swollen Bruise On The Chin Be Treated?

Hi. My 5 year old daughter who is very skinny and boney...weighing 30 pounds....just threw herself on a hard wooden floor hitting chin first about twenty minutes ago. She screamed so bad holding on to her chin jumping up and down losing her breath from the pain. The second she took her hand off I noticed a huge swelling red ball covering her entire chin and blue bruise in the middle. I tried an ice pack but she screamed that it hurt to be touched so I gave her tylenol. She finally stopped crying and seems fine but her chin is doubled her average size popped out and looks odd shaped. Should I wait it out longer and see if the swelling goes down? Should I take her to the e.r.?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

X-ray should be done to look for any micro fracture and any major injury. What you are describing is called haematoma.

This bluish color and swelling is there due to leakage of blood. You should have her NSAIDs and her swelling will go away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
