How Can A Swollen Varicose Vein On The Knee Be Treated?

Yesterday I had a varicose vein pop during the night and woke up to find my knee & calf black & blue. I went to my Doctor & he said it was normal & that the blood would be absorbed into the body. I was told by a friend that I could develop a blood clot. Should I be taking anything like baby aspirin to thin the blood? Thanks Betty

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your doctor, the blood clot due to the ruptured varicose veins will eventually get absorbed. However, to facilitate faster resolution, it would be good if you could wear compression stockings toes to mid-thigh or wear Elastocrepe bandage wrapped from the toes to mid-thigh in a gradually reducing compression.

Please keep your leg elevated on another chair while being seated to avoid leg swelling. Also, it would be good to give as much as is possible to the involved leg till complete resolution of the hematoma.

One important management advised is that once the hematoma has resolved, to prevent future such problems, please consult a General surgeon and surgically get the varicose veins of the lower limb treated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
