How Can A Tender Lump On The Base Of The Skull Be Treated?

Well, this is a long shoot but here goes...i have a small lump on the base of my skull, nearly on my neck, behind my ear. it almost feels like a large pimple but the surrounding area is tender. its weird. I noticed yesterday and now it feels like its a little swollen upward behind my ear. Not sure if there are any glands back there, maybe a small infection? I should call me doctor. Any insight?
