How Can A Tree Nut Allergy Be Treated?

My twelve, nearly thirteen year old son is having his two yearly allergy test this afternoon. He has a tree nut allergy to some nuts. The letter says avoid taking any antihistamines for five days prior in case of allergy skin prick test. He did have a dose either Thursday or Friday night (can t quite remember). If it was Friday, that s just less than a full five days, by a few hours. Will it now make a difference to his results? He is tall for his age and a healthy weight.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Honestly speaking, there is nothing like stopping antihistamine drug before 5 days of allergy testing. Ideally it should be avoided within 48-72 hours of allergy testing. And this is important if test result is negative for all allergens. If test result is positive for allergen means no effect on antihistamine drug. So no need to worry for this issue. Best treatment of allergy is identification of allergen and if possible complete avoidance of it. So you can should avoid tree nuts exposure in your son's case. In severe cases of allergy, immuno therapy, omalizumab injection etc are available.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
