Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter received a shoulder /neck abrasion and whiplash in a go-carting collision today. She was seen, cat-scanned, and released. Here s a strange question: In treating the abraded area with bacitracin, can application cause any significant side effects by reaching the bloodstream? She s feeling a little light-headed now, (about 8 hrs after the event), and we re making sure she has had enough to eat and drink.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Whiplash management is mostly what is needed, cleaning the part with application of antibiotic ointment, taking over-the-counter pain medicines, ice pack off & on with 10 minutes gap is advised. Prescribed pain medication, physiotherapy or local steroid injection may be added if there is no relief with home care. Bacitracin is an antibiotic ointment, so can be used to treat/prevent skin infection. While using it, if intense itching, rash or hives, difficulty in breathing follows. The application should be immediately stopped & doctor's advice should be taken to relieve the allergic symptoms.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavaler
