How Can A Wound Caused By A Nail Scratch Be Treated?

I was scratched by a child’s fingernails about a week ago. Washed with soap and covered with neosporin for a few days to prevent scarring. Now it appears that it has moved into a fungal/ringworm infection. So I have begun putting lotrimin on them and again keeping covered. Is it possible that I contracted the fungal infection from the scratches at the beginning?

Hello,

We cannot exactly say what the etiology of you getting the infection is? You say you washed it with soap. You should not wash any wound with soap at all.

You need to wash it with clean and clear water only. No soaps, detergents or anything to be used to the raw area. If you can use, then use antiseptic solutions like Dettol lotions to clean the area and dab it with cotton and put any antibiotic cream or vokadine iodine ointment and cover with clean dressing.

This is the procedure for doing first aid. So, I hope you learned now where could you have gone wrong in getting the infection. Now take any antifungal medication orally or local creams to subside it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
