Hi my name is Sarah and I m 38. I have been eating sponge for about 30 yrs on and off mainly on. I ve only just opened up about it to my psychologist and gp. I m worried about what it s doing to my body. I crave it so bad and eat about 4-5 washing up sponges a day.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is good that you have told your GP and psychologist about this issue, they would be able to institute both behavioral and medication treatment that may be helpful.

Both of these would work in conjunction to help decrease the craving. You may need to remove the stimuli from your environment, e.g. remove any sponges so that you do not have access.

I hope this helps.
