How Can Alcoholism Be Treated?

I was sent home from the ER with a three day supply of this drug for alcohol use. They told me it would make me sick if I drank while taking this med. I am desperate to stop drinking. How long does one like me need to take this? The only symptoms I have are the shakes & that's actually not every day. So, I'm not to bad off. But, I do want to stop drinking. Seems once I start drinking it's difficult to stop. Really, I just want to know how long would someone like me need to be on the medication? Thanks, Lynne Elmore

Thanks for contacting with your health concern

1. The drug which has been given to you as an adjunct in chronic alcoholism is 'Disulfiram' [drug used in substance dependence] which is given as 800mg as a single dose on the 1st day of treatment, followed by 100 mg daily

2. as far as your question is concerned regarding how long one has to take the medicine, it will depend upon your treating physician since drug interaction with alcohol is intense [intense flushing of neck & face accompanied by sweating & heat, palpitation, headache, and hypertension initially then hypotension] as a result its use might have to be discontinued in you [if the same reaction happens].

3. Occasional/recurrent shakes could be alcohol induced or withdrawal tremors and because you are a chronic alcoholic thus probably one has to examine you very carefully to exclude hepato cellular failure and for cirrhosis of the liver.

4. check regularly with:

. blood examination: Hb%,TLC,DLC,ESR
. Stool for occult blood
. Chest X-ray
. Liver Function Test
. Endoscopy of upper G.I. tract.

5. It could be chronic alcoholism with Tremors thus stop alcohol and give high protein nutritious diet. (But if there is impending coma-no protein diet)

MANAGEMENT:

. Abstinence from alcohol intake.
.Rest: reduction of physical activity reduces metabolic demands of liver and increases the renal perfusion.
. counselling & family support is necessary
. Diet: salt-free high protein diet, or:
Inj. Neurobion 2cc IM daily for 10 days
I.V. 25% glucose (4 ampules) stat and then I.V. Dextrose 5% 1000ml with 1 ampule MVI
Ryle's tube and stomach wash

. When able to take by mouth:
Tablet Liv. 52: 2 tab. thrice daily
Syrup Jaundex: 2 tsf twice daily
