How Can Alcoholism Be Treated?

Dear Sir, My brother is alcohol addict for over 10years, We want him to be admitted to a rehab centre, We want a long treatment for him, more than 3 months. He is torturing my senior citizen parents , where my father is bed ridden. My brother is well educated, and because of his habits he has lost his job and family life. Requesting you to call him and give counselling and visit you. Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is advisable to take him to rehabilitation or de-addiction center. Home treatment is not advisable. Complete isolation from surroundings, regular counselling sessions, Disulfiram drug under observation, motivational talks etc are needed. And all these are not possible at home. So better to take him to de-addiction center and consult psychotherapist.
