How Can An Ear Infection Be Treated?

Hi, i ve been dealing with an ear infection lately, and I m have a really tough time getting the anti-biotic to sit in my ear properly. I was prescribed with Neomycin for my ear - 3 drops, 3 times a day, for 5 minutes each ear. What has happened is that in the 5 minutes that I m leaning over waiting for the 3 drops to settle, my ear clogs up 100% of the way, leaving me completely clogged in that ear. This usually lasts for about 12 or more hours. This has kept me from keeping up with my normal dose of antibiotics. At this point, I don t know whether I should take less antibiotic, or stop it completely.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you are having issues using topical antibiotics, you can follow up with your doctor to switch to oral antibiotics like Cephalexin. You can also use cotton swab dipped in 2% acetic acid to clean the ear.

Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need further clarification.
