How Can An Inguinal Hernia Be Treated?

HI I noticed my inguinal Hernia (confirmed by my PCP) ABOUT 3-4 WEEKS AGO. I FIRST THOUGHT it was a build up of scar tissue from my hysterectomy which I had due to Endometriosis, stage1 B, about a year ago, followed by Radiation. My PCP HOWEVER CONFIRMED THAT It IS A HERNIA. MY QUESTION IS: DO THESE TYPES OF HERNIAS SOMETIMES JUST GO AWAY? OR DO THEY ALWAYS REQUIRE SURGERY? I do not have any pain or discomfort at this time, it just appears, disappears and reappears. What is your recommendation for treatment at this time?? Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, surgery is the only way to treat hernia and it wont disappear on it self. Even if there is no pain, hernia will only grow and cause paon in future. Also, it would be good to have it done laparoscopically if this is available in your institution since for recurrent hernia, laparosopic surgery is the most optimal option since it is less invasive. Also, you should take into account that hernia may become incarcerated in future so it is better to manage it as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
