Hello,

You may be having shingles. It is important to not scratch the rash as it may spread further. You can take Benadryl to help with the itchiness (be mindful of drowsiness with this drug). Sometimes a local ointment with acyclovir can be used if you are within 72 hours of the starting of the rash.

Normally it should start to feel better in a few days and completely resolve in 10-14 days.

Old patients or patients with chronic conditions may need oral acyclovir in a few cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
