How Can Arthritis In The Hips Be Treated?

I recently learned that I have arthritis in one hip with cartilage loss. An X-ray and MRI suggest I will need hip replacement in future. I am 75 in good health but my 3 to 5 weekly fitness center visits are getting more difficult. They include beginning and ending 10 minutes on elliptical, 12 stations of isometrics of 60 seconds each separated by 60 seconds on a stationery bike. My hip pain started this summer after some heavy lifting of RR cross ties for a landscape project. Should I discontinue the fitness sessions to recover or proceed to replacement as soon as possible if replacement is inevitable?

Thanks for contacting with your health concern.

1. As you are a diagnosed case and underwent certain investigations, so without being able to examine you directly, keeping in mind your AGE and symptoms, the following will be my symptomwise approach:

i. Consult an Orthopedic surgeon [or for a second opinion] regarding hip discomfort/pain since it could be because of hip osteoarthritis [present], AVN [avascular necrosis], DVT [deep vein thrombosis], PVD [peripheral vascular disorder]

ii. Another major factor to exclude in your case is Osteoporosis [Age + Pain], so check with your serum Calcium and BMD [bone mineral density] test.

iii.till you get an appointment, best which you can do is to slightly change your lifestyle: i.e. avoidance of poor posture, limitation of excess joint loading, use of the walking stick, avoid sitting on floor & climbing stairs as far as possible, use the commode.

PS. The symptoms have to be carefully assessed by your doctor to ensure that whether it requires immediate medical attention or long-term therapy and also the choice of surgery or hip replacement will depend upon the further stage/ substage so consultation with an Orthopedic Surgeon is highly recommended.
