Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, a friend of mine, suffering from arthritis in his right knee, is trying very low doses of cannabis extract in the hope to get rid of the pain. The cannabis extract was made from unknown cannabis plants (from the street) that were dried and then processed the usual way (decarboxylation) with later evaporated ethanol. After the first day of intake he discovered that his urine was dark (reddish) at 2 AM but later at 7 AM, before breakfast, his urine was found normal again. My question: is this an alarming sign? My friend feels fine and had no (perceived) side-effects.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, this is normal. Cannabis excrets from kidney in urine. So urinary discoloration is common when someone is taking Cannabis. So nothing to worry about color change in urine. Honestly speaking, don't try Cannabis for arthritis because this is not solution. It is advisable for him to consult orthopedic doctor and start conventional treatment for knee arthritis like physiotherapy, calcium, vitamin D3 and replacement surgery (if needed).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
