How Can Blood Clots In The Lungs Be Removed?

Hello, I just found out my 79 year old Mom is in the hospital with 3 blood clots in her lungs and blood clots in her legs!!! They are giving her medicine right now to dissolve them but I would like to know how dangerous is it for the blood clots in her lungs??? Can they be dissolved??? Thank you so much for your time to answer this for me. Really upset right now and scared.... Debbie Karsko

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi Debbie,

Blood clots in lungs are usually sign of clotting mechanism gone wrong. The blood might have become thick and hence there were clots in her legs. These clots then broke off and traveled to the lungs where they have caused a block in the blood supply.

The drugs that dissolve the blood clot can work in few ways and are usually either blood thinners or fibrinolytics. However please know that this is a serious condition and usually associated with significant life time problems.

Constant monitoring is essential. There are people who come out with good outcomes. Hoping for the best.
