How Can Blood Sugar Levels Be Lowered?

My father is a diabetic patient from past 2 years with a very high blood sugar level, which fluctuates in between 280 to 580. Currently he is on insulin. Please let me know: 1) If his blood sugar level can be maintained. 2) Is there any infection, which is causing the blood sugar level to fluctuate? 3) What are the treatment options available? Thanks, Neeraj R
