How Can Bone Infection In The Leg Be Treated?

Hi, My son-in-law has not been able to walk for over 1 month. Nine years ago he was in a motor bike accident. He has steel rod up his leg and had pins in his toes and ankle on his right foot. All of a sudden he got severe pain in his foot and ankle. Went to ER , dr tried to get fluid out of ankle but could not. They could not figure out what it was. Sent him home and he went to an urthopedic dr who said he now has an infection in his bone. He had a nuclear scan and that is how they found out. He goes to a foot specialist next week. I am so worried that he could loose his foot. He still can t walk on it and still has pain, but not as severe. I have never heard of an infection in the bone. I would appreciate to hear what you know of this condition. Thank You so very much. Sincerely, Ms.Hirl
