How Can Bowel Obstruction Be Treated?

hi, my name is jodie. i had a bowel resection 4 years ago and have been in the hospital 5 times since with a bowel blockage. i know i need to be careful about my fiber intake. is it alright to juice all my fruits and vegetables to get the nutrition from them or is just the fact that it is still fiber and will bind with whatever else happens to be in my bowels at that point. i am confused as to weather or not it is a safe way to deal with this. also is heat a good therapy for the abdomen. thanks YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Having a bowel resection 4 years ago is often associated with changes in bowel movement including severe constipation.

Indeed, diet is very important, including:
- Drink plenty of water
- Do not take only fruit juice; should take whole fruit to increase fiber intake
- Plum or psylloial fiber supplement can help
- Have your meals regularly
- Depending on your health status, should have short walking after having your meals to induce bowel movement
- Go to toilet each time you feel the urge, do not hold
- Take lactulose to soften the stool
- Probiotics will help improve intestinal flora

Heat therapy can help with bowel movements. However, it all depends on the primary cause that has led to bowel resection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini
