How Can Breast Cancer Be Managed?

hi-I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my right breast and had a bilateral simple mastectomy as a result on January 9. there was no lymph node involvement and margins showed no cancer. I am progesterone and estrogen positive with scores of 7.9 and 9.2 respectively, and I am negative for HER2 with a score of 9.2. I am being told that I need to take a hormone reducing pill to avoid recurrence. The oncologist tells me that I have a 20% chance of recurrence without this therapy. I understand now that breast cancer cells can be found in the abdomen etc, and that the risks for metastizing with breast cancer is a concern. I have also had encometrial cancer about 7 years ago, with the result being a total hysterectomy, oophorectomy, and the removal of 42 pelvic lymph nodes, none of which tested positive. I am not at ALL excited about taking this medication after reading the side effects. Is this overkill, or legitimate cautionary procedures?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately, 20% (1 out of 5 women) is a significant amount and if you can reduce this risk that would be good.

Side effects are possible but they may not occur or may not be severe. It is unfortunately not possible to determine who would have no effects or who may have many. If effects do occur, you can let your doctor know so that the mediation can be modified.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
