Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had Laryngitis late in September, full blown cold in early- mid October, cold went away but cough continued.... Fever with cough in late october. Went to Walk-in clinic late october was diagnosed with Bronchitis and prescribed Amox - antibiotic. 1 week no improvement with fever 102.. went to ER for chest xray to rule out pneumonia, was given cough pearls and told to complete antibiotics. Improved condition within 2 weeks....except for nagging unproductive cough every time I speak...can t get though a sentence without the cough.
Cough can be present up to 6 to 8 weeks after a cough/cold. This is called post viral cough or post infectious cough. The exact reason is not known but it is thought to be due to persisting inflammation in the chest. It tends to go on its own but if it is very irritating you can use over the counter cough suppressant/ antihistamine/decongestant combination, to see if this helps.
Even though you are not congested, the decongestant may help with any secretions that you are having that may be contributing to the cough. Some persons may not be aware of the cough itself.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
