How Can Burning Sensation And Itching On The Buttocks Be Treated?

Embarressed to ask.. But I have an irritation at the top of my butt crack. It s like the skin seperates and burns. It itches and burns now. It has always happened on occasion and I thought it was from loose skin. But lately, it has not gone away. Very irritating. I don’t have health insurance at the moment to get it checked. Is there anything I can buy at the pharmacy?

Hello,

Inflammation of the body folds is called intertrigo. Sometimes it can be complicated by bacterial or fungal infection or both.

Intertrigo occurs as a result of- friction, heat, moisture in an area. Treating these aspects would help, if there is an infection this needs to be treated as well.

Treatment involves:
(1) Separating the folds with cotton or linen material to reduce friction.
(2) Using a barrirer cream such as zinc based cream or petrolatum.
(3) A few days of a mild steroid and since it is itching, consider adding a topical anti-fungal (fungal medications can cause itching).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
