How Can Bursitis Be Treated?

Hi, I was put on Humira two months ago for ulcerative colitis. It has helped my stomach immensely. They are starting to decrease the steroids and at first everything was fine, but know my joints and muscles are hurting. My primary doctor diagnosed me with bursitis a few years ago and i was a low dose anti-inflammatory, but when I was admitted to the hospital for my ulcerative colitis the doctors took me off. I just turned 40 and I feel like I m 80.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is most likely a condition called bursitis which may be caused by trauma or by any other irritation of cubital bursa, a small fat pad in the elbow. At this point, you should rest with an elbow, apply ice, take nonsteroid painkillers and elevate your arm and put elastic compress.

It should lead to symptom improvement within 12 hours. Later, if there is no improvement, it would be advisable to do X-rays and see if fracture exists. Also, if hematoma or seroma accumulation may persist, then elbow function and fluid evacuation should be done by the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
